English II

In which we tackle descriptive writing

On our quest to perfect our writing skills, and as a preliminary to our work on short stories, we will visit Modern American Literature, and the master of descriptive writing: John Steinbeck.

We will be studying Steinbeck's most famous work: Of Mice and Men - a touching tale of the friendship between two men, set against the backdrop of the United States during the depression of the 1930s.

Learning objectives:

  • recognising some stylistic features of writing such as description, effects of sentence length and carrying phonetics into fiction (sound-spelling).

  • practising using these features (DIY)

  • getting acquainted with a famous American writer and a classic novella

  • improving essay-writing skills such as paragraphing, writing introductions and editing
