Mydentity

English VII

In which you create and share a version of you; your inner and outer worlds, as well as reading about the identity struggles of others and considering the impact of sharing through writing.

It's time to study one of the most famous books of modern time: The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. If at all possible, try to read it for yourself first, and for all its connotations and history second. Opinions are everywhere, and you should listen to your own first.

  • What are your impressions of the book?

  • Are you enjoying the storyline? Why?

  • In what ways can you relate to the characters?

  • Which are your favourite parts of the story?

  • Why do you think it's a classic?

The Short Story

So... perhaps you looked up D.B's The Secret Goldfish? What did you find? A Google search for it yields many different results - give it a go!

As we review the genre, we take J.D. Salinger and Holden up on their offer of a story untold: we tell it ourselves. Every year, students add to the collection of 9th grade short stories called The Secret Goldfish. We can't wait to read yours!

There are two rules to follow:

  1. You must respect the tradition of the genre.

  2. You must use the exact details Holden gives you.

Part 1 of this course asks you to read and consider issues of identity in J.D. Salinger's classic The  Catcher in the Rye. You will summarize your reading by writing a commentary on certain aspects of this book. You will also write a short story that is connected to this novel, record and audio version of it, and illustrate it, working with movie making software and online publishing tools in the process.

Part 2 involves looking at some other texts and taking part in discussion groups in preparation for creating a three-part project about yourself. You will work with translation, illustration, layout, writing, research, and analysis.
