Time Capsule; The Romantics

English IX

In which we meet poets and writers of the Romantic period, and consider the role of the arts as society changes over time.

Try saying the word "romantic" out loud, in a lovey-dovey way. You might even want to accompany this with pageant-stye gesturing.

Now say it in a derogatory way, as if two people making plans for Valentine's Day is about to make you throw up.

Right. There you have it: the most common interpretation of the word, and the emotions it evokes.

Romantic with a capital "R" is a time period. Rather brief, in terms of literary history, yet significant all the same. Some of our best known writers come from this period, and, as the writers of the period might themselves have argued, this may well be because they reached deep into a well of emotions and natural instincts and played on these in ways that resonate with readers on a level beyond the intellect.
